"Sejour tres accueillant au Morning Star Hotel”

We have spend very pleasant 5 days in Hanoi city. We particularly thank the staff of the Morning Star Hotel who provide us all we need. Very good place situed in Hanoi for shopping or trips around Hanoi. Don`t lack this address.

“Best location with great rooms!”

Stayed at the Morning Star for 4 nights at the end of March and another 4 nights in April after returning from Hoi An.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the M. S. You can't beat the location. Smack in the middle of the Old Quarter and about 50 meters from Hoan Kiem lake. Everything is in walking distance.
The rooms are big and comfortable with great bathrooms. The view from the balcony in rooms 401, 501 & 601 are just the greatest. And so is the view from the breakfast room on top of room 601.
We'll definitely stay there again.

“good modest hotel”

This hotel is in the busy backpacker area surrounded by some very nice restaurants. Rooms are clean and nicely kept. Rooms can be noisy but in Hanoi, its very hard to avoid noise, especially from motorcylcists. Breakfast was rather poor in comparison to other hotels we stayed at in Vietnam.

“Great little place”

Our family of four stayed at the Morning Star in late December 2007 and early January 2008, with breaks in between for trips to Halong Bay and Sapa.
It was very clean and comfortable with plenty of hot water and reasonable water pressure.
The reception staff were wonderful – helpful and friendly. They organised taxis for us, booked a city tour, gave us hints on what fares to expect and even gave the kids an occasional neck rub while playing on the computers. Internet access was free on the two computers in the foyer and because it is a small hotel, only about ten rooms I think, there was no waiting around. Easiest internet access of the whole trip.

Room was great value $50US per night for 4 of us, 1 double bed, 1 single bed and 1 mattress made up each day on the floor. Small balcony with shutters that helped keep out street noise.

Breakfast included was basic but hearty with pho on offer as well as western options like toast and jam. Generous servings. Restaurant had great views over Hoan Kiem Lake.

Location on Hang Hanh Street was great – one minute walk to the Lake, plenty of places to eat and drink. Close to great shopping.

I would definitely stay in this hotel again.

“You will most likely not get the room you booked”

We stayed in the Morning Star in Nov 07. The Hotel is ok, especially the room-numbers ending with 01 are nice. We booked the Morning Star twice in advance and we never got the promised room in the Morning Star but were sent to a different hotel in a less attractive location and with less attractive rooms (for the same price). We insisted to be transferred to the Morning Star for the next night which worked out but of course is is annoying to always pack and unpack your baggage. However this is very likely to happen in other hotels, too. Most guesthouses will give away your room if they can sell to some one else for more money. The breakfast in the MS was not very attractive and the bed sheets were just about ok clean. Because of these experiences I would not book the Morning Star again but choose one of the numerous hotels and guesthouses offering the same quality for a better price. Unless you do not arrive in the late afternoon or in the evening it is very easy to spontaneously find a nice room.

The real Hanoi experience - genuine staff, an arm's reach from local businesses and eateries, a hop skip and jump to Hoan Kiem Lake. The previous reviewer is spot on, the hotel is immaculately clean with all the amenities and comfort of a five star property.

I booked via email after checking out reviews on tripadvisor as well as for the location. Rate was USD50 per night, USD10 each way for the airport transfer.

Stayed as a single guest in room 601, twin bedded with balcony (as I requested a room with a view to the lake). Possibly the best room as the view was fantastic and high up enough not to be bothered by the traffic noise which you tend not to notice as much after the first day anyway. The beds were comfortably firm and the towels fluffy and soft. If I remember correctly, the bottled water in the fridge was complimentary.

From the room you will hear music around 6am. It is the young and old of Hanoi exercising by the lake. So early morning walks around the lake are highly recommended - 50 paces from the hotel's front door.

Breakfast was included in my room rate. It's pretty basic, but I chose pho and strong black vietnamese coffee - a great kick start!

Hang Hanh Street is actually a quiet street containing other small hotels as well as a hairdresser/spa where you can get a wonderful hot rock massage for USD9 and also manicures and pedicures. Another 20 metres and you come across western style cafés and bars. In the early evenings, right next to the hotel's front door, you will find a lady selling pho soup, just pull up a stool and join her local customers.

The hotel offers free internet access in the lobby. It's a great opportunity to talk to other guests and to get to know the english speaking staff, who are really warm people and willing to help in any way. Also the hotel has a lift, ending at the sixth floor with a walk upstairs to the rooftop café.

Although I passed many other hotels in the Old Quarter, I liked Morning Star's proximity to the lake, distance from the typical touristy shops and the feeling that I had the best room and view in all Hanoi.

I'm planning to take the family to Hanoi next year and will be booking at Morning Star again.
